May 28th, Franklin and Jessica Richardson (an African American couple) looking for a place to picnic on a Mississippi campground had a gun pulled on them by a white employee.
“This lady literally just pulled a gun because we out here,” Richardson said in a video posted to Facebook, “and didn’t have reservations for a lake we didn’t even know we had to have reservations for.”
Richardson stated that she, her veteran husband, and their 2-year-old dog made the decision to go to a lake near them called Kampgrounds of America in Starkville, Mississippi. Not long after arriving, an employee with a gun arrived.
Not five minutes later a truck pulls up and a white lady screams at us. She then jumps out of her truck with a Gun.
According to WTVA Fox, the employee stated that she was a property manager and that they needed reservations to picnic there, prompting the couple to leave. Another property manager, however, (who is the employees’ husband) told that they only needed reservations for camp or RV areas. According to Richardson, the woman yelled at them: “You don’t belong here. You’re not supposed to be here.”
According to Slate, the video of this incident was posted Sunday, and has over a million views. The employee has been fired, and Kampgrounds of America released a statement saying that they do not “condone the use of a firearm in any manner” on its grounds. WTVA Fox stated that the Richardson’s have a lawyer to see what their next step should be.
